Every now and again I go to the Evening Telegraph website from my home town as every so often there's a story that makes me chuckle. Here's the latest.
Corby has been ranked as one of the worst places in the country for cultural and leisure facilities.
In the table, compiled by the Local Futures Group, Corby ranked 373rd out of 376.
Kettering came 359th, East Northamptonshire came 320th and Wellingborough was ranked 296th.
The index measured areas on factors including the number of national heritage sites, the concentration of outlets like cinemas, theatres, museums and galleries, shop floorspace and the number of leisure centres.
He, he, the paper is asking people for their opinions. I love that part, you get locals trying to defend the town but in all honestly it's a toilet. I may have been brought up in and around the town but if you look at anywhere else in comparison it is a total shit hole. I am so glad to have cut the bungy cord that used to pull me back in.

What we need is to play an absolutely rubbish team and give a good old fashioned thrashing. It looks like my wishes have been granted, it's Rangers on Saturday...

Who says insurance is boring???
TRUE news story. NOT a joke. Maybe. A lawyer in Charlotte, NC purchased a box of very rare and expensive cigars, then insured them against fire among other things. Within a month, having smoked his entire stockpile of these great cigars and without yet having made even his first premium payment on the policy, the lawyer filed a claim with the insurance company. In his claim, the lawyer stated the cigars were lost "in a series of small fires." The insurance company refused to pay, citing the obvious reason: that the man had consumed the cigars in the normal fashion. The lawyer sued....and won! In delivering the ruling the judge agreed with the insurance company that the claim was frivolous. The judge stated nevertheless, that the lawyer held a policy from the company in which it had warranted that the cigars were insurable and also guaranteed that it would insure them against fire, without defining what is considered to be "unacceptable fire," and was obligated to pay the claim. Rather than endure lengthy and costly appeal process, the insurance company accepted the ruling and paid $15,000.00 to the lawyer for his loss of the rare cigars lost in the "fires." But... After the lawyer cashed the check, the insurance company had him arrested on 24 counts of ARSON! With his own insurance claim and testimony from the previous case used against him, the lawyer was convicted of intentionally burning his insured property and was sentenced to 24 months in jail and a $24,000.00 fine.

Wow! Something from IT that actually works.
As many of you know at the beginning of the year I was seconded into IT for 3 days a week (now only 1 day per week) to help them with their business reporting.
It has been a very frustrating time for me as we’ve been using the new data warehouse, in principle it’s a great idea having all of your data connected and in the same place but in practise I have rarely seen it work.
I am using COGNOS to interrogate the data and have found it so slow and unpredictable. It almost brings me to tears when it takes 30 seconds to run a report one day then the next it takes more than 30 minutes.
With the particular data set that I use, a major problem is that the data warehouse stores more than 100 fields of data on a transactional basis. This means that we have over a million records with 100+ bits of info each. Simple maths tells me that that’s over 100,000,000 single pieces of data. It is no doubt that it takes so long to summarise the data. In fact as the company will only ever get more information it will only become more of an issue.
In reality, to do my job (this part of it) I can do 95% of my analysis using only 20 fields and a grouped up level of data. A much more manageable 100,000 lines of data, for those with a maths GCSE that’s 2,000,000 bits of info, 50 times less than before.
Anyway… I suggested this nearly 7 months ago and they’ve finally done it for me. A report that I’ve created in the old system used to take between 10 minute and an hour now took less than 1 minute to run on my first attempt. You might think that that is impressive but that’s not the half of it. The development and testing of these reports will be much more time efficient, rather than running a report to see if it works then twiddling my thumbs and hanging around on the off chance that the report works. I will now know practically instantly.

4 Years of weather
Call me a sad bastard if you want... but I have been recording 'the weather' for 4 years now.
When I say weather I mean max and min temperatures for London. I started because someone said that this year was much worse (temperature wise) than the year before but I didn't think so. I looked up the data and proved them wrong. In you face!
I continued because I was playing with an offset function in excel (I was using it to extend the graph range automatically when new data is added) and wanted to see it work, I also think I have a very mild form of OCD (am much better now as I no longer have to have the TV volume on an even number).
Here are a selection of my charts. 
I have also managed to get hold the same data going back to 1959 which does show a clear increase in temperature. Is this down to global warming? Who knows...
Interesting facts I have found so far...
1) Thursday has the highest average maxium temperature
2) Hottest day in London over the last 4 years = 35C
3) Coldest Day = -6C
4) Warmest Year = 2003
5) Coldest = 1963

SC Movie Review 20
Batman: The Dark Knight.
I’ve been waiting to see this film for ages, and it didn’t disappoint. It’s the biggest film that out this summer, and it could have been bad, usually movie houses tend to destroy franchises by trying to make them appeal to a wider audience do bring in extra cash this results in mass dumbing down.
The first ‘new’ Batman was very good, nice and dark with plenty of action and a good story line. The new Batman continued where it left off with a great bank robbery scene, only Heat has bettered that.
I’m not going to go on about all the various parts of the film , if you like Batman and that sort of thing then go and see it you won’t be disappointed. I have a couple of gripes / questions though.
Can anyone tell me why the Sandman was there at the start?
I felt the whole mobile phone sonar set up was silly and added 20 minutes of unnecessary film length. The bullet reassembling to get the finger print was verging on the ridiculous. It reminded me of why I stopped watching James Bond. An invisible car, I mean come on…! People’s imaginations can only be stretched so far. At least make it vaguely possible.
April was disappointed that she didn’t feel more remorse about the girl dying but hey the girls are usually there for eye candy. I’m sure there’ll be a new one in the next film.
Another thing that annoyed me was not the film, it was a review on BBC.com, it said to ignore the hype about Heath Ledger’s performance as the Joker, the real candidate for the Oscar should be Christian Bale. Did they watch the same film? Bale was fine, he’s a good actor but there’s no sense that he actually had to try in order to play Batman.. The Joker was excellent. Not having seen many other potential Oscar winning performances yet this year (Waiting for Ben Stiller in Tropical Thunder) I think it’s a bit too soon to tell.
Other than that great film.

As an interesting side note, I now know what sort of person buys nachos when they go to the cinema. Aging electronic rockers… Gary Numan was in the queue in front of us when we were waiting to get ripped off for ice cream and a drink. He eventually sat a couple of rows behind us.

Pushy National Blood Service
I received a text from the National Blood Service this morning saying.
"MR CLARK, we've written to invite you to give blood. Please see our mailing or call 0845 7711 711 for details. Thank you."
I've been a blood donor for over ten years and they've never hassled me before. They must be desperate. I'm now booked in for next Tuesday morning.
